What are chakras? A chakra, is essentially, an energy centre within the human body and electromagnetic field. The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘wheel’ or ‘disk’. These spinning wheels (or energy centres) have seven centres in the body. The chakra system is based on these seven spiritual energy centres. They start at the base of the spine, through the neck and move all the way through the crown at the top of the head. When balanced, we can think of them as pathways that promote perfect harmony between the body, mind and spirit.
The human energy field (which is us) has four non-physical bodies: spiritual, mental, emotional and etheric bodies. In addition to the three human energy fields (spiritual, mental, emotional levels), there is a fourth level called the auric (etheric) field. We are energetically connected through the auric field (our aura’s) to all people of the world as well as the animals and plants. The fourth level is a bridge between our spirituality and our physical nature. It is a bridge between heaven and earth. It is the level of the loving human heart, and the level of LOVE.
The chakra’s are really gateways of consciousness between these subtle bodies which transmit energy to the physical body. There are over 300 chakras in the body located near the endocrine glands, organs and body joints. Seven major chakras which correspond to the body’s endocrine system are the main chakras we work with in Chakra Psychotherapy. They are called the root chakra, sacral chakra, solar plexus chakra, heart chakra, throat chakra, third eye chakra and the crown chakra. The three lower chakras (root, sacral, solar plexus) involve formation of our ego’s physical, emotional and cognitive natures. The upper chakras (crown, third eye, throat) involve the development of our spiritual nature and the Higher Self. The middle chakra (heart) is where human nature meets with spiritual nature and transformation takes place.
Holistic healing recognizes the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the self. The chakra system is a very complicated energetic system and having your chakras in balance can really help you in all four areas.
One concept of energy is that it is something that can be felt but not seen. This is the part of you that feels a vibe when you enter a room. Or you notice when someone or something feels ‘off’ to you, yet you may not be able to put your finger on what it is. The energetic body is full of vibration and information, and many of us can feel it but do not know how to use it to better understand ourselves and our experiences. The chakra system is the key to becoming conscious of this unconscious material so we can positively impact our growth and healing.
Before anything comes into form on the physical plane it exists as energy, which is why the chakra system can provide great perspective for preventative health. Each chakra is associated with specific systems of the body and can impact physical ailments, as well as psychological qualities. When we understand the subtle sensations of the energetic body, we can respond to our needs before those subtle vibrations become physical illness, dysfunctional relationships, self-limiting patterns, or poor life decisions.
How do you know if you have a blocked, underactive, over-active or malfunctioning chakra? It can manifest in a variety of different ways, ranging from psychological issues, physical malfunctions, dis-ease, and/ or illnesses. Quite often it shows up as a manifestation of a combination of the physical, emotional, and mental. It can also show up as spiritual disconnection.
When a chakra is out of balance it usually means that it is over/under active or blocked. When that happens, it is usually felt on an emotional, mental and/or physical level. The chakras record an imprint of every emotionally significant experience that a person has had in their life. The chakra also can be experienced as sensations in the body. All of this can leave a residue or cell memory. Emotional distress, a traumatic experience, inner conflict, childhood wounding are just some of the things that can be stored in the body as images, thoughts, memories, feelings, beliefs and sensory experiences, essentially frozen in time within the mind-body system (us). We can begin to heal and move ourselves in a new direction by incorporating traditional psychotherapy with chakra (energy) psychotherapy, and focus on the root cause of the imbalance within.
